Virus

We’re all familiar by now with Covid-19, however the digital world is experiencing a big increase in malware, trojans, viruses, ransomware and scams.

If you have an iphone watch out for apple-online-guard, it looks like an official apple security notice but it’s definitely not – more details here on how to remove it

GoDaddy have also recently announced that 28,000 of their hosting accounts have been compromised.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself (apologies if you already know these:

> UPDATE – This is so important to keep your operating system, programs and apps up to date, not doing this can leave an opening for an attacker.

> LOG-OUT – If you’re logged into an online account and using it then great, but if you’ve finished log out to help with safety.

> PASSWORDS – Please ensure these are strong by using a mixture of upper case, lower case, numbers and special characters. It’s also recommended to mix the passwords up on different accounts. Use Leverage Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) where possible, this offers an extra layer of protection.

> ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE – Even a free version can offer some protection.

> BACKUP – Backup those important documents and files to an external hard-drive or USB flash-drive and keep in a separate location. Online storage is great as well, but consider how valuable the information you are backing up online.

> TO GOOD TO BE TRUE? – Attackers can lure you in with amazing offers, be aware when browsing by clicking on a popup or link you could potentially download harmful items to your device.

> EMAILS – Scammers are clever and their emails look real, however if it’s something you weren’t expecting or from an unusual source then please be careful, hover or click on the senders email address to make sure that it’s from a legit source. If in doubt try and get in touch with the sender by a different method.

> OPERATING SYSTEMS – I mentioned keeping up to date, if you use Microsoft Windows, version 7 is no longer supported. Using this version could leave yourself wide open.

Please stay safe outside but also inside as well!

Arty Stories

It was a pleasure to be involved with this project, to create a platform to enable students to view Art History eBooks for free!

There are six eBooks for digital download and these explore the influence of art in society from 3,000 BC right through to today.

The first stage was to register the domain name and provide web hosting which was created via our account, this ensures keeping everything in one place.

The second stage was to create the website. The author was very specific on the content and this was placed into sections throughout the website. WordPress was used and a download manager was sourced to keep an eye on the number of downloads.

The final stage was registering the site with both google and bing search engines.

Villa Loukia

This luxury villa on the Greek island of Kefalonia needed a major website upgrade to show case it as a 5 star holiday destination. The villa was purpose built in 2004 and the stunning location was chosen for it’s mountain and sea views.

The villa sleeps 10-12 and is perfect for large family holidays with 5 double bedrooms, swimming pool and a large terrace. It’s also in walking distance of the small village of Karavados and close to the sea.

The domain was moved to our hosting account and a wordpress site was created. WordPress was the obvious choice, as there is potential to have it’s own online booking system in the future, also with wordpress there is the capability for the owners to edit the site themselves.

It was a privelege to be involved with this project and the new site will enhance the villa’s reputation as a 5* holiday home.

Freeborough & Co

Freeborough and Co is a small team of architectural designers and building surveyors based in West Sussex, the company is run by Tom Freeborough.

This is a well established company with a very old website, the brief was to bring this up to date with a fast loading, fully responsive and modern site. The hosting was moved to our in house hosting package and when the site was completed the domain was re-directed to it’s new home.

The website is a static site and has several portfolio pages which contain image sliders to showcase some of their projects.

Web design – South Downs Eco Homes

www.southdownsecohomes.co.uk

Met up with Nigel the owner of South Downs Eco Homes, at the site of a new build on the South Downs. Not just any new build but a highly efficient eco home built to Passive House (Passiv Haus) standards.

This type of self build is becoming very popular is it is environmentally friendly, extremely energy efficient and airtight.

A Passivhaus uses around 90% less energy for heating than a typical building and 75% less than typical new builds.

Fresh air is introduced via a heat recovery ventilation system (MVHR) which removes the heat from the stale outgoing air which would normally be lost in a leaky conventional build.

The web site is a basic one page design using bootstrap 4, with a contact form, we host the site and manage the domain names.

The plan will be to add more detail and photographs as the build progresses. With regards to photography, I took a few stills on site along with a few drone images, as the new build is in a beautiful location.

Web Design – LEEPS

LEEPS Consulting

We recently completed this reasonably sized website for the specialist rail electrical safety company based in Petersfield. Not only do they provide specialist safety training for companies in the rail industry, but they also offer leadership and management training for other industries.

The new website is now operating under the www.leepsconsulting.co.uk rather than the original leeps.eu domain, this wasn’t a political shift or a Brexit driven decision but more of an aesthetic one! The original domain is now directed to the new one.

To enable an increased level of functionality and for the business to add their own news items and event details, wordpress was the obvious choice. The event manager is particularly powerful, this allows new training events to be posted online with a booking facility.

LEEPS Consulting are looking to the future and are planning virtual reality safety solutions to enhance rail safety procedures. We are working with them with this exciting new technology, please watch this space!

Web design – Discus

Discus Potters Wheels

Working with this new company who have taken over a business which design and manufacture pottery wheels. A very niche market but they have an excellent range of potters wheels for beginners, amateurs and professionals. The company is Discus Potters Wheels and is based in Petersfield, Hampshire. They have tweaked the design and also the engineering making it an extremely powerful but yet compact potters wheel.

From my point of view working with Nick (the owner) has been a pleasure, regular meetings to discus the development of the site and marketing strategy. We decided on a wordpress site with a woocommerce online store, social media marketing will focus on instagram, facebook and also twitter. An email marketing campaign will also be created, but complying with the latest GDPR rules.

Interested in seeing the range of discus potter’s wheels? Or perhaps just to see what we could do together? Please visit the site at https://www.potterswheels.co.uk

Web design

A busy time for web design and especially wordpress, I recently helped Roger at www.triplevengineering.co.uk to move his unfinished engineering website to my hosting package, updates were then made to his site to improve some of the sections and also make it visible on the major search engines. An SSL certificate was also added to the site to improve it’s security.

Call me now on 07798 711271 if you need any help with your site.

Shop

Tom my chef son wanted to add another pop up, this time at our local restaurant Annie Jones. We had previously updated his site and it was no issue to create a new product line for people to place orders. Thanks to the power of social media and local press, the tickets sold out within 2 weeks.

fibrefarmer.com

Recently created this web-site for Broadlands Meadows Farm, an Alpaca farm based in Sheet, Petersfield.

The site is a static site and is mobile optimized, complete with location map and contact form. I also took the majority of the photos on the site over a couple of visits.

The farm contains a large herd of Alpaca but also Ronaldsay Sheep, Boreray Sheep, Angora Goats, Donkeys and some Chickens. The Alpaca are very cute and I was lucky enough to photograph a new born Alpaca and Angora.

The farm is incredible in that it sells a wide range of products produced from the farm, garments, yarns, hay, haylage and even Alpaca Poo, yes Poo! It also caters for lots of organisations and schools who visit the farm to enjoy the animals and experience the country life.
